THE OUTCOME
By moving oncology news from email to a dedicated mobile platform, we successfully bypassed the problem of our e-newsletters remaining unread or unopened. This shift led to a measurable increase in conference registrations and a higher daily active user count. Doctors specifically noted that the new audio article feature allowed them to stay updated during commutes and between patient appointments.
Project Snapshot
- Role: Lead UI/UX Designer
- Tools: Figma, Lookback, Miro, Jira, Storybook
- Deliverables: User Flow Mapping, Wireframing, UI Mockups and Prototypes
- Focus: Accessibility, High-Urgency Content Delivery, Notification Strategy
The Challenge
Oncology professionals rely on timely news and research, yet our e-newsletters frequently remain unopened. The goal was to build a mobile solution that offered high deliverability and engagement while respecting the limited time these specialists have. We needed to balance complex content types including research papers, audio articles, and conference calendars without overwhelming the user.
The Process
I collaborated closely with medical marketing and editorial teams to define the core requirements for a physician first experience.
- Discovery and Flows: I mapped out user journeys that minimized tap depth. For high-urgency news, I prioritized a direct path from push notification to the full article.
- Iterative Wireframing: I designed mobile first wireframes to test the hierarchy of the personalized inbox and the search functionality. I focused heavily on the audio player UI to ensure it was functional in a hands-free environment.
- Feedback Walkthroughs: Conducted internal walkthroughs and external testing with physicians to validate the UX. Refined navigation hierarchy and alert frequency preferences based on feedback.
- Design System Integration: To support future growth, I developed a library of scalable components in Figma. This ensured that new content types could be added without breaking the existing visual language.
The Solution
The final application serves as a comprehensive news hub tailored to the oncology workflow.
- Smart Notifications: Replaced unreliable emails with targeted push alerts that lead directly to relevant research.
- Audio-First Content: Integrated an audio player for all articles, allowing doctors to consume news during “dead time” between appointments.
- Unified Conference Calendar: Created a streamlined browsing experience for upcoming events with direct registration links.
Impact
The final application serves as a comprehensive news hub tailored to the oncology workflow.
- Event Awareness: Conference listings with registration links led to a measurable uptick in event interest and participation.
- Increased Engagement: Early users reported higher satisfaction with push notifications vs. email and preferred having a centralized medical news hub.
- Content Accessibility: Audio articles made it easier for doctors to consume news during travel or between appointments.
