The project: The Educated Patient is a health information platform designed to aggregate and present medical content across a wide range of conditions.
The goal: The primary goal was to create a user-friendly interface that organizes extensive health information, facilitating easy navigation and content discovery for users. Additionally, the platform needed to effectively integrate advertising opportunities without compromising the user experience.
The challenge: Managing and displaying a large volume of health-related articles without overwhelming users. Ensuring users can effortlessly find relevant information amidst extensive content categories. Balancing the inclusion of advertisements with maintaining a clean and user-centric design.
The process: First, I needed to understand what our existing competition in this space did for their website layouts and their UX patterns. I made a mood board:

After browsing several websites and understanding the common layouts within the medical news industry, I began to work on wireframes after hearing from stakeholders about what key features we wanted to offer:

Research & Analysis: Conducted a competitive analysis of existing health information platforms to identify best practices and areas for improvement. Reviewed user behavior patterns to understand how individuals seek health information online.
Information Architecture: Developed a hierarchical structure categorizing health conditions and topics to streamline content discovery. Created user flows to map out the typical paths users would take to find information.
Wireframing: Designed low-fidelity wireframes focusing on layout, navigation, and content placement. Iteratively refined wireframes based on feedback to enhance usability and clarity.
Ad Integration Strategy: Identified optimal locations for ad placements that would be visible yet non-intrusive. Ensured that ad content was contextually relevant to the surrounding health information.
Usability Testing: Conducted sessions with target users to test wireframe prototypes. Gathered feedback on navigation ease, content accessibility, and overall satisfaction.
Outcome:
Improved User Navigation: Users reported easier access to desired health topics, leading to longer session durations.
Effective Ad Integration: Advertisements were seamlessly incorporated, resulting in increased click-through rates without detracting from the user experience.
Scalable Design: The wireframe structure allowed for the addition of new health topics without necessitating major design overhauls.
The final design:
